Clarie (Johnson) Fray

07-02-1941 - 08-08-2025

Obituary

Clarie (Johnson) Fray was the eighth of ten children born to the late Jimmy Samuel Johnson and Gertrude (Smith) Johnson on July 2, 1941, in Orrville, Alabama.

She confessed Christ and was baptized at an early age and joined Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Orrville, Alabama. Clarie was educated in the Dallas county school system.

After graduating from Keith High School, she moved to Brooklyn, New York. She was united in holy matrimony to Gausley Fray who preceded her in death and to this union three sons were born.

Also preceding her in death, one brother, Jimmy Johnson, Jr., and four sisters, Leslie Arrington, Cora Brown, Lizzie Sweatt, and Pearl Johnson.

She studied Business Administration and worked at Citibank Bank New York, New York, until she retired.

After retirement, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama, in 1998 to be closer to family.

While in Birmingham, she studied early childhood education and started teaching at Wee Care Academy, later on at Fitts Daycare, and before retiring again she taught children at the YMCA.

She became a member of Faith Temple Church under the leadership of Bishop Ruby Kile then later under Pastor Barbara Mathews where she was active in the ministry and involved in the singles’ ministry.

Due to declining health in August of 2023, she returned to Montgomery, New York, in the care of her granddaughter, Tanisha Fray Parker. In March of 2025, she moved to Roselle, New Jersey, with her son, Bernard Fray.

On August 8, 2025, she received her heavenly wings and took her flight. Her legacy of life will shine on and radiate forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her sons, Bernard Fray (Janice) of Roselle, NJ, Kelvin Fray of  Levittown, PA and Reginald Fray of Birmingham, AL; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four siblings, Elnora Fitts  of Birmingham, AL, Lindsey Johnson of Pembroke Pines, FL, Leon Johnson (Carolyn) of Birmingham, AL, and Gertrude Geneva Wilson of Birmingham, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
